My First 5K

I started training to run a 5k back in October 2013.  I downloaded  a free Couch to 5K (C25k) app on my iPhone.  The app worked tremendously well, and I would recommend to anyone who has never run, or hasn’t run for a very long time.  It starts you off with 30 seconds jogging followed by 90 seconds walking.  This pattern is repeated until you’ve reached 20 minutes.  You start with a 5 min warmup walk first, and finish with a 5 minute cool down.  Then after 8 weeks, 3 days a week, the jogging portions increase and the walking portions disappear until you’re jogging for a whole 30 minutes.  Granted it was not a full 5k at the end of it … but it was the very first time I had run for more than 10 minutes in one go, let alone 30 minutes.

Halfway through the program I decided to register for a 5K race.  I was lucky to find that the Santa Shuffle 5K race was happening just a few days after I would complete the training plan.  I thought that was just perfect and went a head and booked it, December 7th! Of course being Ottawa it snowed, but happy to report not on the day of the race, however it was -7 deg C.   Although disappointed that I didn’t run the whole 5k in one go, I was very proud to have completed it – I trained on the treadmill and I wasn’t completing the 5k distance in less than 48 minutes – it seems very different then on the road – so I was ecstatic to see my time a whole lot quicker for the “real thing”.  My actual race time was 40 minutes and 17 seconds.  Not a brilliant time, but at 8 minutes faster than the treadmill I was ecstatic.  I caught the runners bug that day!  And couldn’t wait to find my next race.  I also needed a reason to keep training!!!!  One day I’ll reach half marathon status but no time soon lol,  but I am working towards it.

The next day I was wondering around in target and came across the Insanity DVD pack.   I started that very day, in the hopes it would help me to improve my strength and endurance, and maybe shed a few pounds along the way.  I’m finding Insanity very hard indeed.  I can not keep up at all.  But I am pacing myself and I’m getting minutely better as the days go on.  Day 10 down 53 to go!  Unfortunately I’m missing out on the jogging at the moment as I can’t seem to manage both on the same day.  I might just try on the Cardio Recovery Day and the Off day for now and see how that goes.
